Hania Rani is still young for a classical pianist, but she’s well ahead of her time when it comes to writing her own music and bringing it to life. She wears the weight of her pieces, where harmonic and rhythmic relations set the pace and tone for bleak, yet moving melodic endeavours. Her first full-length came out recently via Gondwana Records, label responsible for releasing records from Go Go Penguin and Portico Quartet, and where piano music is actually a must. Rani does stand out from her label peers with her sensitive interpretation of music, with each note and sustain being carefully placed over haunting chords, making “Esja” a deeply complex piece of classical music.
